Man slaps child at Walmart for crying? Yes, Roger Stephens slapped someone else’s two-year-old child and was arrested. See photos, video and find out more details on the disturbing event which took place in Stone Mountain, Georgia, resulting in a felony cruelty to children charge.
According to the Atlanta-Journal Constitution, quoting the police report, the event, which took place at Stone Mountain Walmart began when the mother of the 2-year-old child, Sonya Mathews was approached in the aisle by the 61-year-old man, Roger Stephens (mug-shot above). According to the police report, he told her: “If you don’t shut that baby up, I will shut her up for you.”
The report further states that in another aisle, a few minutes later, he picked up the child and slapped her across the face four or five times and then said to the child’s mother Sonya Matthews: “See, I told you I would shut her up.” He was detained by another store customer until security arrived and he was subsequently arrested, according to media reports on what transpired after the man slaps child.
Speaking with The Gwinette Daily Post about the incident, the mother said:
“Nervously, he was saying he just couldn’t shop because the baby was crying all over the store,” Mathews said Tuesday. “I got the feeling he was mentally disturbed.”
Roger Stephens has been charged with felony cruelty to children. According to WSB radio in Atlanta, he is being held without bond at Gwinnett County Jail. His next court appearance will be on September 8.
